A while back I posted about a few awards we were up for.  When all the votes were counted for Mashable’s Open Web Awards, we were thrilled to find out that we took the second prize in the Environmental category.  A big congratulations to Ecomii who took the first prize.

Thanks a million to everyone who cast their vote.  It’s a real honor to be recognized in a forum like this along great companies like Google and Evernote.

The finalists for The 2008 Crunchies will be announced any day now, and we’ve got our hat in the ring for a few categories there.  Stay tuned…

What a week here at Gazelle HQ!  We were featured on the Mike and Juliet morning show, NECN, and WalletPop.  The result was a ton of activity.  Let’s see which products made up the top 10.  In the Cell Phone category, the Apple iPhone 8GB wrestled the top spot back from the Palm Treo 650, which fell to #3.  The random jumper of the week goes to the old school Nokia 6085 which went all the way from non-existent to #2, not sure where that came from!

  1. Apple iPhone 8GB
  2. Nokia 6085
  3. Palm Treo 650
  4. Motorola RAZR V3m
  5. Blackberry RIM Pearl 8100
  6. Motorola RAZR V3
  7. Blackberry RIM 8700c
  8. LG Chocolate VX8500
  9. Motorola Q
  10. LG LX160

In the rest of the categories, the Dell Laptop and iPod 5th generation stayed at #1 and #2.  The biggest category mover goes to the Gaming Console category, as 4 different items made it into the top 10.  No doubt people are selling their old gaming systems and getting ready for new ones for XMAS!

  2. Apple iPod Classic 5th Generation 30GB

Welcome to the once-every-other-week edition of top items trade on gazelle.com!  Not much to report in the world of cell phones, as most of the usual suspects in the top 10.  The biggest story is that the Treo 650 overtook the iPhone 8GB as the most traded cell phone:

  1. Palm Treo 650
  2. Apple iPhone 8GB
  3. Motorola RAZR V3
  4. Motorola RAZR V3m
  5. LG Chocolate VX8500
  6. Motorola Q
  7. Motorola Razr V3c
  8. Blackberry RIM Pearl 8100
  9. Blackberry RIM 8830 World Edition
  10. Blackberry RIM 8703e

The Dell notebook climbs back up to #1 in non-cell phone rankings, as the Apple iBook fell from #1 out of the top 10.  Apparently everyone upgraded to the new Apple a couple weeks ago and Apple trade-ins are declining.

  1. Dell Notebook
  2. Apple iPod Classic 5th Generation 30GB
  3. Toshiba Notebook
  4. Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP
  5. IBM Notebook
  6. Apple iPod Mini 1st Generation 4GB
  7. Sony Notebook
  8. Microsoft Xbox Gaming Console
  9. Apple iPod Nano 2nd Generation 4GB
  10. Compaq Notebook

Extreme Green

October 28th, 2008

Last week Joanne Kaufman wrote an article in The New York Times about people who are pushing themselves and their families to unusual extremes to lead a greener life.

Examples of the tactics some are taking include abstaining from heat and air conditioning,  growing their own produce and raising chickens, saving all of their trash for a year (and blogging about it), and reusing Ziploc bags.

Extreme attempts to reduce their carbon footprint has caused some to be branded “carborexic.”    Sharon Astyk, who limits her family spending on new consumer products to $1,000 a year has seen attitudes shift since she adopted her “dark green” ways in 2002.  She is quoted as saying “People have moved gradually from ‘Sharon is a fruitcake’ to ‘Sharon is a fruitcake who might make some sense,’ ”

All admirable ideas, but definitely not for everyone.   Whatever shade of green you are, it seems like it all can start with some practical steps.   Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection makes some less disruptive suggestions such as checking your tire pressure, washing your clothes in cold water, or switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs.

I wonder how Al et al would feel about Gazelle?

Greenpeace recently released the 9th edition of their Greener Electronics Guide.  This year Nokia was the clear winner demonstrating leadership in both low impact manufacturing practices and recycling programs.  Nintendo and Microsoft were at the bottom of the list.

The guide ranks the 18 top manufacturers of personal computers, mobile phones, TV’s and games consoles according to their policies on toxic chemicals, recycling and climate change.   Greenpeace took on this project in 2006 raise awareness about e-waste and encourage manufacturers to take responsibility for the full life cycle of their products, including the electronic waste that their products generate.

Will people vote with their feet and come to Gazelle to sell their (relatively) toxic Microsoft and Nintendo products in favor of greener goods?
