Most of us probably remember studying for hours for that huge math test we may of had once in our lives. Whether it was Algebra, Calculus, or Trigonometry we all had one device right by our side. The calculator has been virtually everyone’s sidekick at one point in their life. From graphing equations to complex formulas, our little buddy was always our weapon of choice. Most of us after completing school will never be solving linear or quadratic equations again. So what do you do with that expensive machine collecting dust in your desk? Unless you are an addict to the 8bit Tetris game you downloaded on it, Gazelle has your solution! We have just recently added calculators to our ever-growing catalog. Just look up your model, answer a few simple questions, and we will send you the cash. To trade in your calculator now click here!

Recycling Just Got Easier
February 25th, 2009
There’s a new feature on the site that we’re pretty excited about - the Recycler Network. While we are always champions of reuse as the first option, there are items that simply do have any life left in them and must be recycled in an environmentally sound manner. We often get requests to take printers, older monitors, and other items. One challenge here is not to compound the environmental problem. Shipping e-waste across the country to a responsible recycler keeps e-waste out of the landfill, but how much fuel do we use and how much CO2 are we expelling in the process? Not to mention the hassle of shipping bulky items.
To help address this, we wanted to create a more localized option to help people recycle without the hassles of shipping. If you have an item that isn’t in a category we support, such as a big old CRT monitor, or a fax machine, you can search our network and find a local recycling location that will accept it. Everyone in this network has met our standard as a responsible recycler.
So what defines a responsible recycler? We break it down into 4 basic sets of criteria:
- A no export policy with regard to the whole unit (unprocessed) recyclable e-waste material to any developing or non-OECD countries.
- A no landfill policy to prevent any and all e-waste from entering solid waste landfills.
- No use of prison labor as defined in the Basel Action Network’s Pledge of True Stewardship.
- Data security policy. Any and all products that contain media containing devices (such as hard drives or flash memory) must be wiped free and clean of any and all personal data prior to destruction.
So if you have electronics to recycle that we aren’t taking online, find a location near you that will. We’re also working to grow the network, so if you know a recycler, please suggest they join our network.
It’s all a part of the reCommerce revolution.

Opening Drawers, not Wallets for Charitable Giving
January 21st, 2009
If our customers are an indication of the general public, people were very generous this past holiday season. As you know, we offer 4 different payment options: check, PayPal, amazon.com gift card, and donation to a cause.
I want to spend some time today on donations.
The number of Gazelle customers choosing to donate the proceeds of their electronics more than doubled from November to December. Part of the increase is due to our partnership with StandUp For Kids, the outstanding organization dedicated to helping homeless children.
But we also believe that there’s just a general movement towards helping people in need. It’s a beautiful thing that this is happening now, when more people are struggling because of tough economic conditions. We often hear that the value we pay for electronics is “found money” — real dollars for items that haven’t been used in ages. Instead of putting that extra cash that they surely could use in their pocket, those that are more fortunate are donating the proceeds to those who need it more.
Luckily individuals are stepping up, because it’s getting tougher and tougher for large companies to keep up with their charitable programs as they try to cut costs. In 2009, companies should follow what individuals are doing, and donate their electronics to a cause of choice by using us! We’ve done fundraisers for a number of comapnies very successfully and hope to help make it a trend. Let us know if we can help your organization.
